Hole-By-Hole with Eamonn Darcy

County Wicklow native Eamonn Darcy takes us around Druids Glen. Darcy is a prolific and successful professional golfer; he is the winner of four professional events on the European Tour and a big fan of Druids Glen.

  1. Great opening hole. A tee shot down the left hand side will leave the best approach to this narrow green, which is well-guarded by trees.
  2. This vast green is notoriously fast, particularly for left-to-right putts. If the pin is on the left, take plenty of club to carry the bunker.

  3. An iron or fairway wood might be the best choice from the tee to find the fairway on this short par 4. The green is guarded at the front by two bunkers, which will catch underhit approach shots.
  4. Vast bunkers on both sides of the landing area make this a tough driving hole. The left side should be favoured for the approach, as the ground falls sharply down to the lake on the right.
  5. Although big hitters may be able to reach this hole in two, the reward is seldom worth the risk. Lay up and trust your wedge.
  6. This big uphill par-4 requires a big drive to reach the green in two. You won't see much of the green on the approach.
  7. After a difficult hole, a bit of a breather. Aim a long iron, hybrid, or three wood inside the bunker to set up the best approach.
  8. A picturesque par-3 with water front and left. The green slopes severly from back right to front left which leaves a difficult pitch if you miss the green to the right.
  9. A straightforward par-4 with a generous landing area off the tee. The green is slightly elevated, so make sure that you take enough club to carry the front bunker.
  10. Favour the right side of the fairway. The green falls away and well-protected at the front.
  11. A relatively straightforward par-5 which big hitters will reach in two. Bunkers guard the front of the green so take an extra club on the approach.
  12. From the elevated tee, the tee shot is across water to the generous green, which slopes from back to front. Once the ball is in the air, you'll have an anxious wait while you wait to see if you have chosen the right club.
  13. With the fairway set at an angle, it's vital to choose the line carefully. Too far left and you will run out of fairway; too far right and you'll find a watery grave. The lengthy approach across water to the very narrow green is a difficult shot.
  14. No point flirting with the bunkers off the tree, so check the yardage and choose the right club for the lay up.
  15. Vital to find the fairway here—your approach is over water. However, the landing area is generous.
  16. Vast bunkers protect both sides of the fairway. The second is uphill and plays longer than the yardage to the narrow and heavily bunkered green.
  17. As you walk off the green on the 16th, you may feel slightly nervous about the task ahead here on the 17th. My advice: take plenty of club as there's ample room behind the green.
  18. One of golf's great finishing holes. If you don't hit a massive drive, lay up and trust your wedge.
Druids Glen is a great course and I always love playing it; I hope you enjoy your game here.
